FILM SERIES

Path of Glory 16+ yrs
Stanley Kubrick’s classic Paths of Glory is set in WWI France. An egotistical general orders Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) to lead a suicidal attack against the Germans. Emerging from the trenches, his men are decimated by murderous machine-gun fire. To shift blame for the defeat, the general court-martials one soldier from each company. Dax defends them. The ending of this humane film is quietly transcendent. 1957, B&W, 97 min. Discussion to follow.

ART SERIES

Everyday Printmaking 12+ yrs
In this printmaking class, instead of synthetic inks, we will experiment with non-toxic organics, such as coffee, tea, henna, beetroot juice, grass juice, substances that change colour as they oxidize. We will enhance these unstable organic materials with semi-permanent man-made things, such as glue, string, stamps, and watercolours. We will apply our organic materials with hard-edged tools (rulers, chopsticks, cup rims).

Everyday Installations 12+ yrs
We will question our habits of perception and interpretation. In this class, we will work with seemingly insignificant objects from everyday life, including remnants of natural materials that are intimately but invisibly present in daily life, onion skins, human hair, lemon seeds, dead leaves, dried flowers. We will use these as raw material to construct small, mobile installations. By transforming these materials, we give them new meanings and make our perceptions more agile.
