President’s Message to Kerrisdale Community Centre Members – Fall 2015

The goals of the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society continue to be keeping the community involved in decisions about programs and services at our Centre and maintaining independent control over how we run our affairs and allocate our financial resources.

Towards these goals, representatives from the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society, along with representatives from the Hastings, Kensington, Killarney and Sunset community centre associations, met five (5) times between June 18 and July 6 with representatives of the City and Park Board in talks mediated by Vince Ready intended to achieve a new Joint Operating Agreement (JOA). The Agreement spells out the rights and responsibilities of the Park Board and the local community centre association in the operation of the community centre.

The meetings were challenging and, unfortunately, a number of issues remain unresolved.  The talks are suspended until late August when the mediator will be available again.

The other Vancouver community centre associations were not involved in these talks.  They too are anxious to develop a Joint Operating Agreement with the Park Board, especially those associations who met with the City and Park Board for almost eighteen (18) months between winter 2013 and summer 2014.  However the Park Board has indicated that it does not wish to meet with them at this time.

In the meantime, Kerrisdale Community Centre continues to offer a broad array of programs to meet the needs of the Kerrisdale community and provides excellent service to our patrons.  We are grateful to our staff and volunteers for this.  We are one of the busiest community centres in the City, and we take great pride in having been voted the best community centre in Vancouver this spring.

I’m sure you’ll find more great programs for you and your family in this fall program brochure.  Enjoy!

Respectfully submitted
Kathleen Bigsby, President
