Are vitamin and mineral supplements needed?

It is easy to reach for a bottle of vitamins or minerals and feel confident that the essential nutrients for good health have been eaten. Many Canadians take one or more dietary supplement daily because they are worried they will not absorb the nutrients from food or they cannot meet their vitamin and mineral requirements with food alone. Often Canadians take a supplement they don’t need but don’take one they might need. Find out when it might be a good idea to take a supplement and when it is best to rely on food, and before you next reach for that bottle of vitamin C or fish oil pills, you may want to ask yourself whether you need them in the first place.
